Description
Our "work in progress" research will delve into the evolution of Puerto Rico's trade patterns with the countries of the NAFTA, CAFTA-DR, CARICOM, MERCOSUR, ANDEAN PACT, and the leading world economies over the last two decades. Identify and analyze the key sectors that drive Puerto Rico's exports and imports for each economic integration bloc in Latin America, the Caribbean, and leading world economies. The data show that four of the most important American economies, such as Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, have established a trade activity in which their exports to the Puerto Rican market have greatly benefited their trade balance. On the other hand, large economies such as Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and El Salvador have yet to increase their trade activities with the Puerto Rican market over the last two decades. In the case of small economies, countries such as the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua could develop significant export activities to the Puerto Rico market.
